Description
View across Dartmoor from disused railway bridge. The huge and incredibly tough granite blocks used in the bridge supports can be seen. Originally a horse drawn railway opened in 1823 by the Plymouth and Dartmoor Railway, the single track 4ft 6in gauge branch line was just over 10 miles long and was primarily used to transport granite from local quarries (at Swell tor and Foggintor) down to Yelverton the to Plymouth and beyond. Prisoners for Dartmoor prison at nearby Princetown were also transported. The railway closed in 1956. Taken in September.
