The Dirigo II is located in the Southwest Harbor Coast Guard Station. Isn't she beautiful!! The Coast Guard are vitally important to the health and safety to the mariners working and enjoying the waters in Maine. This particular Coast Guard Ship monitors the local, state and federal waters. I felt particularly badly for these brave men and women during the government shutdown. They were the only branch of the United States Armed Forces who were not paid in the latest government shutdown that lasted for about one month. They risked their lives to monitor the dangerous waters while not receiving a dime in compensation. I spoke to some people on the island who told me that their circumstances were dire and they will be feeling the effects of the shut down for years to come. We need to salute our brave men and women of the US Coast Guard for their bravery and their dedication to preserving our safe waterways.
