Title
Dipping Rufous
Artist
Jim Tobin
Medium
Photograph - Photography
Description
Too nervous about the dangers of resting to eat, this Rufous Hummingbird hopefully consumes more energy during feeding than s/he expends hovering while feeding!
This photograph was not taken at night, despite the black background. Shooting at very fast shutter speeds and very small apertures the natural daylight does not provide enough light on the acreage behind the feeder. The bird and feeder are illuminated with strobe lights to showcase the iridescent feathers and the ultra-highspeed wings.

Jim Tobin replied:
Thank you! They are a lot of fun to photograph because of all those iridescent feathers. I found one loose on the feeder once and tried photographing it in macro -- amazing detail and color!
