Description

A male Anna's hummingbird (Calypte anna) grabs a sip of nectar before being chased off by another hummingbird "guarding" this bush of beautiful salvia flowers glowing in the late afternoon sunlight.

This photo was taken in early November 2016 along the shoreline of Richardson Bay just north of San Francisco.

Hummingbirds are among several of my fave subjects to photograph. (Additional images may be viewed in my hummingbird gallery.) They are a challenge, however, to "capture" within the confines of a camera lens. These guys move incredibly fast!

I am astounded how intricately detailed these amazing birds are designed for superb maneuverability in flight. Hummingbirds have the unique ability of flying forward, backward, up, down, sideways and hovering. They can beat their wings up to 80 times per second and can fly an average of 30 miles per hour. They have been documented to do aerial dives of up to 60 miles per hour.

Indeed, they are but one example of the supreme majesty of creative intelligence in nature.

Revelation 4:11 comes to mind:: "Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created" [Tree of Life Version (TLV)].
