This very beautiful flower growing near a waterfall has such deceptive beauty. The common name of this flowering shrub is Glory Bush or Princess Flower. The latin name is Tibouchina herbacia. Tibouchina herbacia is a species of flowering plant in the family Melastomataceae, native to Brazil. Like many plants, it was brought to the Hawaiian Islands as an ornamental plant for gardens. It is one of the very most invasive species on Hawai'i Island. This plant is a prolific seeder and spread by birds. It forms dense stands in pastures and can also invade disturbed forest areas, displacing native species. In the past 7 years where I live, massive thickets of this plant have completely crowded out any other plants.
Even knowing about this plant, I could not resist taking a photograph to showcase its deceptive beauty against the backdrop of a waterfall.
