"Doppia Coppia" is part of the series of illustrations "The sweet life of an Italian monster" dedicated to Giacomo Casanova, one of the most famous seducers of history, and to his love adventures in the Venice of 1700.
This illustration represents Casanova and a young lady on a terrace of an elegant Venetian palace, after an evening of playing cards. On the tree branch we can see another pair of doves in love. The title of the illustration is given by the play of words: two couples on the terrace and the element of the card game just ended. But not the evening is ended, which Casanova is inviting to continue.Casanova, a perfect eighteenth-century dandy, is dressed in a sophisticated way: the camisiola (silk shirt) under the embroidered tailcoat, the braghesse (short and tight pants), Burano lace sprouting from the sleeves. Buckled shoes and silk stockings complete his look. The lady wears a dress of light fabrics and pastel colors. Everything is perfected with refined decoration elements: precious jewels, shoes, fan, hat and feathers. A velvet false on the cheek completes the seducing opera seducing of the flirtatious lady. In the background we can see the palace brightened by the evening light.
