Description
Featured in: A Birding Group-Wings
This is an African darter bird, aka "snake bird", and they're called that for good reason. When they swim, they submerge their bodies, so only their heads and long necks are above the surface. I can't tell you how many times I was fooled by this bird! Nothing like peacefully paddling along and then turning your head to see, for a heart stopping moment, what you're sure is snake swimming beside you. I never recovered myself fast enough to get a photo of that, but trust me...these are the culprits!
