Description
This juvenile Hawaiian 'Io had just fledged and for 2 days sat in a huge tree down my road, calling for its parents, who would fly in with a juicy rat or mouse and then fly off again. Eventually it flew to another place to repeat the pattern. I would see it new my house for the next month and when I did not immediately know where it was, I would follow its cries for its parents until I found it. This bird go to know me and had no concern for me standing just below wherever it had perched taking photos. While photographing it, I learned the color of this bird's eyes and that the skin on its beak was turquoise colored, being a juvenile. As it ages, the skin will match the color of its beak. This is my favorite one, with its head cocked looking me in askance as to what the heck I was doing with my camera pointed its way. Sadly, these birds are in imperiled, as are nearly all the native bird species in Hawai'i. Their environment is shrinking, the onslaught of invasive species brought to the Hawaiian Islands is unrelenting.

Quite the look!
Heidi Fickinger replied:
This juvenile Hawaiian 'Io was amazing. I kept seeing him all through the neighborhood for several months. I did not always have my camera with me at first, but then started carrying it. This encounter was the most wonderful. I watched his parents come and go multiple times, bringing him food.
