Description
I read up on how to get from Madrid to Cuenca Spain so I thought I was ready. Yes there was a train to Cuenca, yes there was transportation from the train station to the town. Sounded good. Except maybe not on a Sunday when the bus schedules were thin. And except that the bus schedules and the train schedules did not seem to be planned with any idea of coordinaton. It was going to be about a 90-minute wait after the train arrival before the bus came! Taxis did not seem to cruise by the train station on a regular basis so when one finally came by, three of us wandering souls converged upon it and agreed to share the ride. Finally! We arrived at the main plaza in town, an accomplishment all in itself! The plaza is dominated by the Cathedral of Nuestra Senora de Gracia. Like many a cathedral in Europe, it has quite an architectural pedigree. Work began in 1196 and was largely completed by 1257, with many renovations over time. It is one of the earliest Spanish examples of Gothic architecture, built at a time when the Romanesque style predominated in the Iberian Peninsula. In particular, the cathedral is characteristic of the Norman and Anglo-Norman architecture of the 12th century. The exterior was almost completely renovated in the 16th century. In the 17th century, the facade and the towers were reformed in the Baroque style, while at the beginning of the 20th century the facade was reconstructed in the neo-Gothic style repair damage caused when the bell tower collapsed in 1902. The interior has had at least as many alterations and renovations. To say that ‘it is a work in progress’ is probably accurate! The Cathedral is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site encompassing the historic walled town of Cuenca.
