A saguaro with a fan shape at the top is referred to as crested or cristate. They are somewhat rare, and it is unknown why this occurs. It could be a genetic mutation, a result of a lightning strike, or damage from freezing. This large saguaro is growing at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, Arizona.
