Description
This cottonmouth, or water moccasin, was not happy about sharing the road with me as I passed. The name, cottonmouth, refers to its threat display, where it will often stand its ground and gape at an intruder, exposing the white lining of its mouth. Cottonmouths are common to creeks, streams, marshes, swamps, and the shores of ponds and lakes throughout the southeastern United States. This snake was warming on a gravel road on a warm day in late winter. Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, in Dare County, NC, near the Outer Banks.
