Description
Although comfrey (and this is not the wild comfrey) is said to have use in folk medicine, it is thought to have a connection to certain cancers, especially of the liver - DO NOT EAT. The hairs on the plant can be irritating to skin, so wear gloves when cutting or otherwise handling the plant or leaves. It is a member of the borage family.
Okay, you say, why even grow it? I happen to like the flowers and the large, fuzzy leaves - quite a nice plant for the edge of the woods where deer can eat it. Browsing animals like deer and goats LOVE it. It can also be added, with some restraint, to compost to enhance the breakdown of more fibrous materials; it can be used as a fertilizer by making "comfrey tea" and diluting it - a LOT - for other plants. Since comfrey is such a nitrogen-hungry plant it collects and saves nutrients in the leaves.
It is almost impossible to kill once established where it is happy, so be sure you really want it:>). Do some research, and you can begin here:
