Chicory is a branching, scraggly-looking plant, native to Eurasia, but ubiquitous along summer roadsides in the eastern United States. It often stands out alone in gravel areas or open weedy fields, and the flowers only open on a sunny day. Taken as a whole, it's not what you'd call a pretty plant, but the blossoms are a lovely shade of blue, sometimes verging on lavender. I've done a little filtering with this image to showcase the beauty of the flower.
