Description
The cog train up Mount Washington in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire is one of the steepest railways and the first (1869) mountain climbing railway in existence. The locomotive uses 1000 kilos of coals for the return trip up and down Mount Washington.
The original locomotive Hero (nicknamed Peppersass) first reached the summit in 1869 and from than on up until 2008, the Cog was a steam railroad. While it was primarily designed to build the railway, Peppersass saw passenger service until it was retired in 1878.
