Clear Creek in Golden Colorado, watercolor painting by Conni Schaftenaar
My brother and his family had lived outside of Denver for many years. I had never gone to visit - our farm didn't really allow time for vacations, but when his oldest was graduating high school, I went out. He decided to give me the grand tour. The first place we went was to Golden, a few miles away from where he lived, because it was where his daughter was going to attend the Colorado School of Mines the following fall. We then drove into downtown Golden and he pointed out the Coors Brewing Company, right next to Clear Creek, where most of their brewing water came from originally. I snapped a photo standing on the bridge on Golden's main street and finally, almost 20 years later, decided to paint the scene. I have to 'fess up that the two rocks in the mid ground, beyond the two protrusions from the shore, were actually kayakers - sadly, my attempt to paint them looked cartoonish, so they became rocks that are not actually there. I also opened up the view to the sky. I claim artistic license!
