The weather forecast was not looking very good on this day but who wants to spend a day in the Cinque Terre region of Italy sitting in a tiny B&B room?! So we headed off to Portovenere, first by train to La Spezia followed by Mr Toad’s Wild (bus) Ride to Portovenere. From there it was a five-minute boat ride to the island of Palmaria for some hiking. Toward the end of the hike we were treated to views of Portovenere’s Church of St Peter (Chiesa di San Pietro) on a rocky promontory. In between Palmaria and Portovenere is the small channel call Le Bocche that connects the Ligurian Sea to the Gulf of Poets. In the background, nasty storm clouds were gathering and we hurriedly put on rain gear and finished our hike for the day. The original Christian church on this site was founded on the ancient remains of a pagan temple dedicated to the goddess Venus Erycina, and was consecrated in 1198. The black and white bands on the walls were added by the Genoese in the 13th century, presumably between 1256 and 1277. In 1997, the archipelago of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto islands, together with Portovenere and the Cinque Terre, was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
