I was walking along the main street of Castelbuono, a town of about 9000 inhabitants close to the north coast of Sicily, when I noticed the inconspicuous and plain doorway of a church. What the heck? It’s always worth a peek and who knows what you might see? In this case, the interior of the Chiesa dell’Itria (Maria Odigitria) housed a high altar in great Baroque splendor. It is described as “…the summary of all the white-golden stucco decorations…”. And “At the center of this large frame of scrolls and curlicues” is a painting depicting the Madonna Odigitria a work dating back to 1586. “The canvas wisely (?) depicts two religious elders in the act of carrying a large chest on their shoulders from which the Madonna with the child in her arms emerges half-length, an iconographic theme typical of the first Basilian depictions.” I couldn’t have said it any better!
