Description
Paul Gapp, a Pulitzer Prize winner for "distinguished criticism," wrote a scathing piece in the Chicago Tribune regarding Two Prudential Plaza titled "Too Prudent."
It is hard for me to fathom Stephen T. Wright, Principal in Charge of Design for Two Pru, waking up to his morning coffee and opening up his Tribune only to read the following article about his recent creation.
Here are a couple of comments that jumped off the page to me:
"strength unaccompanied by grace or any other enhancing characteristic."
"heavy-handed exercise in terms of its silhouette and the detailing of its facades."
"nuanced stylistic touches that might have raised the building above mediocrity."
"unfortunate tack-on gesture of visual unification that would have been better left undone."
"tying it into its environs posed puzzling problems, most of which were solved quite deftly."
"uninspired design"
"misses the mark of visual greatness by a country mile."
"disappoints any yearning we may have for elegance and beauty."
Here is a link to the entire article.
I, for one, cannot imagine the Chicago skyline without Two Prudential and her beautiful chevron setbacks and sharp pyramidal peak; then again, my opinion and 50 cents (not adjusted for inflation) will buy you a cup of coffee.
All proceeds will be donated to Chicago's Cornerstone Community Outreach in honor of photographer Richard Cleis, 1965-2021.
