Description
Big Stan, otherwise known as the Standard Oil Building, was the tallest building in Chicago and the 4th tallest in the World in 1973, only to be replaced by the Sears Tower in 1974. This photograph is one of the V-shaped perimeter columns designed to reduce sway and bending should an earthquake hit.
What caught my eye was the granite sheathing which is not original to this building. Big Stan was initially covered in Carrara marble, making it the World’s tallest marble-clad building. However, by 1992 every marble slab was replaced with granite or, more specifically, Mount Airy white granite. You may recall that Mount Airy is a town in North Carolina, and the Andy Griffith show was based on a town called Mayberry, which is said to be loosely based on Mount Airy.
All proceeds will be donated to Chicago's Cornerstone Community Outreach in honor of photographer Richard Cleis, 1965-2021.
