Chesapeake Bay Crabbing
Artist
Christopher James
Medium
Photograph - Photography
Description
The blue crab is perhaps the most sought-after shellfish in the mid-Atlantic region, and is caught both commercially and recreationaly. The majority of the catch is commercial. Blue crabs are usually harvested with simple gear: pot, trotline, handline, dip net, scrape, or dredge. Crab abundance tends to be higher in areas with ample cover, such as submerged aquatic vegetation.
During the off season, crab traps can be seen all along the shore lines of the Chesapeake Bay. Some as colorful as this image captured in the fall.

I would, coming from the Pacific Northwest, argue that it is the Dungeness crab that is the most highly sought crab, but that is a small point. My crab pot looks a little smaller than these. I really appreciate the image which is great. Regards, Christopher.
Christopher James replied:
Thanks Jeff for your commentary, but, I have eaten both, having lived on the west coast as well as east coast....the blue crab meat is sweet and personally feel the texture is better but of course I grew up around the Chesapeake Bay so I rest my case...lol

Thanks Barbie.....Sad that the crabbing industry is in a steady decline on the Chesapeake because of Bay conditions....They came back from Kepone disaster but I'm afraid this new crisis is much more serious!!
