Description
This is the Chateau d'Allemagne en Provence. Located in the far south of the department in the Alpes de Hautes Provence, it lies in the village of Germany near to Gréoux-les-Bains which is part of the Valensole plateau. The area is famous for its lavender fields and is located at the confluence of the Colostre river and the Montagnac torrent, which in the past caused it numerous floods.
Listed as a historical monument, this rare Louis XII-style castle is remarkable for its exceptional preservation. Its architecture presents two different eras: A medieval keep from the 14th century and a Renaissance part which has undergone successive transformations.
The whole being highlighted by a magnificent classified park of 4 hectares offering marvellous hundred-year-old trees: lime trees, plane trees, cypresses, chestnut trees adding grandeur to the whole.
Inside, one can admire a spiral staircase of more than one hundred steps connecting the Renaissance wing to the dungeon; a monumental fireplace (plasterwork) framed by two mythological characters standing. Many other architectural details, both inside and out will not fail to seduce you: mullioned windows, machicolations, French ceilings, griffins and other gargoyles as well as a charming little statue. representing a pregnant goddess located in a niche of the balcony of one of the towers.
Originally built by the family of Castellane (1218-1718), it was home to the family of Varages (1718-1839), then by Ripert-Monclar family (1839-1936). Nowadays, it is still inhabited.
