Description
Chasing the monster -
One more from last nights wild storm. Lightning is my muse. The past couple years have not produced that much. This year has been kind of crazy. I have captured 3 descent strikes in the last two weeks. It is not easy to capture. I have a list of predetermined spots to travel to quickly in the seacoast when a storm pops up depending on its line of travel. This view of the South End of Portsmouth has eluded me for years. I could picture it in my mind but was totally unprepared for the beauty of this capture. Usually the wind blows across the water towards New Castle and picks up a lot of mist and covers the lens before lightning even shows its face. Last night was different. There was no wind at first. The storm rolled in as the sun was setting causing an amazing glow. What blows my mind is the size of these bolts. If you are familiar with the Portsmouth area you can see the North Church for comparison. Sometimes photographers will use a powerful lens to compress space between objects making the appear different - larger in size. This is the opposite. This image was taken with a 18mm lens which is fairly wide angle. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did when I pressed the shutter. This is one single shot not a blend of many shots.
And, does anyone else see a little bit of a lightning monster in the bolts on the left marching across the city?
