Description
A red hibiscus located at Charlotte Beach, Rochester, New York. A great place to take the grandchildren.
The hibiscus, also known as the rose mallow, is from the malvaceae family. The hibiscus flower is traditionally worn behind the left ear of a married woman ( or in a relationship) or the right ear of a single women (or someone available for a relationship) by Tahitian and Hawaiian women. The hibiscus is Hawaii's state flower. It is also the national flower of Haiti, South Korea, Malaysia. There are 679 species and the flowers are used in teas or candied to eat. The flowers are large, conspicuous, trumpet-shaped, with five or more petals, color from white to pink, red, orange, peach, yellow or purple and up to 6 inches across.
Charlotte was originally a port for international trade but lake trade began to decline because of competition with the Erie Canal and the railroad lines in Rochester. Charlotte was annexed by the city of Rochester in 1916.
