Description
This beautiful Zaci Cenote with a rainbow in Valladolid, a colonial town in the heart of the Yucatan peninsula, about 100 km from the coast.
Cenote Zaci is a semi-open cenote with a hanging roof offering a cool, shady respite from the tropical heat, with a sloped passage with stairs carved right out of the natural rock leading down behind stalactites to the water’s surface and several places to dive down into the water from various heights, including a ledge halfway up the side of the cave. The cave is about 150 feet across, and 260 feet deep, much of which is filled with water. We even considered jumping in from the top of the cenote opening...
Cenotes are a system of natural sinkholes, found all over the Yucatan peninsula. These sinkholes formed over thousands of years, with the action of acidic rain filtering down the porous limestone rock and gradually dissolving it away. Slowly, this process created huge water-filled caves – in some cases, the cave roof collapsed under its own weight, exposing the water pool beneath to the elements. Cenotes are actually all connected with one another, forming the longest underground river in the world.
The word cenote derives from the Mayan word ts’onot, meaning ‘location with accessible groundwater’. There is evidence that the Mayan people used the cenotes as water sources, but not only – they were regarded as sacred places, where the worlds of the living and the spirits connect.
