Description
The Brown Pelican is one of the "comeback kids" of the post DDT ban comeback stories - these once uncommon are now common along the coast of Texas. If you happen to drive along any one of the many causeways that traverse the bays of South Texas you make see these birds flying right along side the causeway catching the updrafts and "causeway cruising".
I see them often, especially early in the morning over Copano Bay just north of Rockport, Texas. I decided to draw them with three birds shown in various states of growth - the youngest all brown bird in the foreground the middle-aged semi-white headed version in the middle ground the senior citizen in the background with his full white feathered head.
These birds are flying South along the causeway as the sun rises over the bay (barely visible along the bottom of the work) and you can just barely see the wing of the lowest flying in the group. It's meant to represent the glimpse you get through the car window as you drive along.
The original is approximately 10"x8" and is in watercolor pencil with pen and ink. It's done on 140 lb. watercolor bond and please don't reproduce or use without my written permission.
Thanks so much for "cruising" by these "cruisers"!!
