Description
"Cathedral and Bridge at Blois, France"
Loire River, Blois, France
Joan of Arc used the city of Blois as her base of operations before riding thirty-five miles on Wednesday, April 29th, 1429, to lift the siege of Orleans by English forces. After liberating Orleans, she crossed a bridge near this site to lead the French army in a push to Reims, France, where the Dauphin Charles would later be crowned King of France. This modern version of the bridge spans the Loire River.
Blois was also occupied during World War II by the German army, which overcame the city on 18 June 1940. The city was later liberated by American forces during the last two weeks of August 1940. Both during its capture and liberation, the city withstood several days of bombing.
