Description

An American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) opens his bill wide and scoops up a rainbow trout in a Northern California lake.

Unlike Brown Pelicans who dive bomb to catch fish, American White Pelicans cruise around on the water and scoop them up. These pelicans often work collectively to round up the fish and drive them toward shore where it's easier pickings.

Amazing capture! That looks like a pretty big fish (can you see it thrashing about inside the pouch?) caught and staring down its captor's throat here! So does the Pelican really manage to win the battle and gulp that whole thing okay? Does the fish put up a good fight, if eaten does the unlucky prey get swallowed wriggling all the way down as well?!

Thanks, Kyle! Yep, the fish was swallowed alive. Those white pelicans sometimes work as a team to circle the fish near shallow water and they scoop up as many as they can. It's a feeding frenzy, and it's amazing to see how many trout one pelican can swallow whole.

Thanks, Fran! Here's the story - gray pelicans dive headfirst into the water to catch fish in the ocean but American white pelicans scoop them up as they paddle along in lakes. I've often seen a group of white pelicans work together to round up a school of fish and herd them into shallow water then the pelicans have a feeding frenzy. This one was maybe 20 feet offshore and he and his buddies were making pigs of themselves.
