Description

The rainforest of New Guinea is the main distribution area of cassowaries such as the Benett's cassowary, the one-lobed cassowary and the helmet cassowary. The latter also lives in the tropical areas on the northern edge of Australia.
Due to their size, cassowaries play a major role in the rainforest ecosystem in spreading certain tree species that produce large seeds.
These helmet cassowary chicks (Casuarius casuarius) can tell whether a fruit, e.g. the blue quandong fruit, is ripe by its colour.

The illustration is part of a collection of scientific illustrations published for the scientific book: "Die Sinne der Tiere" (Springer-Nature-Publisher).
