The Canadian lynx (Lynx canadensis) is a medium-sized wild cat native to North America, particularly found in Canada and some parts of the United States. It is characterized by its thick fur, large paws, and tufts of black hair on the tips of its ears. These features are adaptations to its cold, forested habitat, aiding in hunting and mobility in deep snow.
Canadian lynxes are solitary animals with a diet that heavily depends on snowshoe hares. Their population numbers often fluctuate in response to the hare's population cycles. They have excellent vision and hearing, which helps them hunt effectively.
These lynxes have a body length of about 31 to 39 inches and weigh between 18 to 24 pounds. Their fur color varies seasonally, generally being more reddish-brown in summer and silvery-gray in winter.
As a species, the Canadian lynx is not currently considered endangered, but it faces threats from habitat loss and fragmentation due to human activities. Conservation efforts are in place to monitor and protect their habitats and populations.
From the Artist: Wild cats are turning into a recurring theme in my oil pastel works, I've featured a few tigers and cougars, but this is my first lynx. While I was working on it, I decided to look up other artworks featuring it, and found that they are pretty uncommon in art. I've given this one a bit more of a summer coloration even though it's a winter setting, just because I wanted some warmer colors in the scene.
The original is and 11" x 14" oil pastel work on archival quality sanded paper. I used Sennelier oil pastels for most of the work and Faber Castell polychromos oil-based colored pencils for the detail work. I've sealed it with five coats of Sennelier's fixative for oil pastels.
