One of these wild Canadian Geese eventually became nervous and with some commotion took to the air skimming just above the ground. As it reached other geese scattered across the field they too took flight until they were all in the air gaining altitude and distance until they were out of range for my camera. They may be considered pests; but, we enjoy getting to watch and photograph them. Now familiar and widespread, these “giant” Canadian Geese were nearly extinct in the early 1900s. Programs which intentionally introduced or reintroduced the species were so successful that they are now often considered pests in many urban and suburban areas. Originally native to the arctic and temperate regions of North America they have now established breeding colonies in highly human populated areas because they provide food and few natural predators.
