Description
Canada, Alberta - 08 by Andrea Mazzocchetti
Alberta is a province of western Canada, on the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains, bordering Montana (USA) to the south, British Columbia to the west, the Northwest Territories to the north and Saskatchewan to the east. She joined the confederation in 1905.
Alberta, located in Western Canada, covers an area of 661.190 km². To the south it borders the US state of Montana along the 49th parallel, to the east it borders the province of Saskatchewan along the 110th meridian. To the west are the peaks of the Canadian Rockies to delimit the border with British Columbia, along the Continental Divide up to the 120º meridian which is then followed to the North until it intersects the 60th parallel that marks the border with the Northern Territories. West.
Except for the southeastern region, Alberta has a sufficiently humid land, furrowed by large rivers and dotted with a myriad of small lakes. There are also three lakes of considerable size. The largest is Lake Athabasca (7,898 km²) which partly borders Saskatchewan. To the west of this basin is Lake Claire (1,436 km²). To the northwest of Edmonton there is the Piccolo Lago degli Schiavi (1,168 km²).
Alberta runs from north to south for 1,200 km and from east to west for 600, and the climate is strongly influenced by these geographic dimensions. To this we must add that the Alberta is presented as a great plateau, its plains are placed between 1,000 meters above sea level of the southern regions and 650 meters of the northernmost regions. In addition, the Canadian Rocky Mountain range of the West is a further element that conditions weather.
The northern regions of Alberta are largely covered by the boreal forest and paradoxically have less frost days than the regions of the South-East where the climate is semi-arid and with much more extreme temperatures (between -35 ° C and 38 ° C between winter and summer). The central and eastern territories, on the other hand, have milder climates.
Alberta is one of only two Canadian provinces (the other is near Saskatchewan) not to have land outlets. The highest peak is Mount Robson at 3954 m s.l.m .. The capital is Edmonton, another important city is Calgary. The flower of the province is the wild rose, while the bird is the great horned owl (Bubo virginianus). As written in the emblem, the motto is Fortis et Liber.
