By The Silver Sea
Painting - Oil On Canvas
Some seas are warm, some are cool. Some have waters of immense tropical blue, others, like this glimpse of the Oregon Coast in the U.S., capture the sky above and create a shimmering ocean of silver.
By the Silver Sea, the artwork, invites the viewer to take off his or her shoes and wade into the surf of the Pacific Ocean. No, the water is not bath-tub warm, and on the best of summer days it’s briskly cool, but the ocean is grand and glistening, a place of so much space and sea and sky that one’s mind is not limited, not boxed in as we so easily feel when we are surrounded by walls.
By the Silver Sea is a magical place, one in which the sunlight glinting on the water is almost blinding in its brilliance. A slight breeze dances through the young woman’s hair while at the same time the sun pours down, golden and warm.
The coastal artwork is a reminder to us that the earth’s most valuable treasures – the air we breathe, the sky overhead, the sun that warms us, the water so precious to life – are not locked up in the vaults of greedy people who do not like to share. While they would be, if it were possible to do so, some treasures are so vast and grand and magnificent that they defy the grasping hands of evil.
Out in the surf, wading in the cool water, waves splashing against her legs, the woman in By the Silver Sea is thoughtful and contemplative, free under the vast sky to be with her thoughts, her dreams, her hopes, her memories, her imagination.
These, also, are treasures that are given to all, and how we use them defines who we are and what we become. Step into the waters of the silver sea, feel the coolness of the water against your skin, and think your thoughts and dream your dreams.
(By the Silver Sea takes place on the Oregon Coast, near Lincoln City on a section of its seven miles of beaches.)
