Description
I was out hiking around Leisure Lake in Nocona, Texas and this interesting bush was growing on the shore of the lake. It is called a Common Button Bush and you can see why with the interesting spike ball of the bush. The bumblebees were all over it flying to and fro all around the spikey balls of the bush. When they landed they dug in to find nectar within the button balls.
Common Button Bushes (Cephalanthus occidentalis) are actually a distant relative of the coffee plant. They thrive in habitats that are undisturbed, especially wetlands, shores of rivers, lakes and swamps. It is considered a shrub and each button ball is packed with tiny tubular flowers that attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. They can grow up to 12 feet tall.
Bumble bees are large hairy bees related to the Honey Bee. A female Bumble Bee has a stinger but hardly uses it and the male does not have a stinger. They control their body heat through their wing muscles. Bees are important for our survival as pollinators.
