Description
The Broom House at Furnace Town, near Snow Hill, Maryland, is a restoration of the house which originally housed strawberry pickers and later converted to making brooms. In the 18th Century brooms were considered "luxury items" that were owned and used by the well-to-do.
The equipment in the broom house includes a "kicker winder" and a "broom vise" which were used to make brooms near the end of the 19th century. There are also smaller "winders" which are used to make pot-scrubbers, cake-testers, whisk brooms and more.
Furnace Town is a 19th century industrial village that includes history and active (reenacted) events of the day. If you are interested in "Early America" this is a good piece to represent one of the artisans' crafts of the time. Where would you display this in your home?
