Description
The trail to Lulu City starts in this area. This bridge crosses over the Colorado River. This is looking south and standing in the river...fun! There's not much left in the ghost town.
The Colorado River trailhead and the Lulu City Trailhead is located in a lovely basin at the north end of the Kawuneeche Valley on the western slope side of Rocky Mountain National Park. The Never Summer Mountains tower over the west side of the basin, and Specimen Mountain and the Continental Divide are to the east. At the head of the valley La Poudre Pass crosses over to the east of the Divide. So, both sides of this valley are feeding the Colorado River as at starts its 1450 mile journey to the great parks of Utah and the Grand Canyon.
Lulu City was a transient mining town in eastern Grand County, Colorado, in the Kawuneeche Valley in what is now Rocky Mountain National Park. The town appeared after silver was discovered in the area in 1879 by prospector Joe Shipler and was built in 1880. The town was named after Burnett's daughter. By 1881 there were forty cabins and a number of business establishments. By this time it was apparent that the silver ore was of low grade, and that high transportation costs made mining in the area marginal, and the town began its decline. It was abandoned by 1885, except by Shipler, who lived there for thirty years.Three cabin ruins remain, along with remnants of other structures. The site was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 14, 1977.

Thank you so much, Catherine. I can remember taking the boys there and letting them play.
