Boulder Calving

Description
Seven million years ago, an enormous lava flow filled the floor of the Rogue River Valley. That floor was the flat terrace on the upper right of this photograph. Since then, softer rock has eroded away around it, leaving this geological feature - Upper Table Rock - and its companion - Lower Table Rock - 800 feet above the current valley floor. But even the hard basalt remaining from the lava flow is subject to erosion. Water seeps into the cracks and crevices of the basalt, and when cold temperatures cause it to freeze and expand, the cracks and crevices expand as well. This enormous monolith of basalt, about 90 feet high, will at some point reach its tipping point and tumble down the cliff face, calving boulders as it goes.
