This beautiful and amazing 62-story, 790-foot (240 m) skyscraper, located at 200 Clarendon Street in Copley Square, is the tallest building in Boston, Massachusetts and New England since 1976. Minimalist in design with a parallelogram floor structure, this building was designed by Henry N. Cobb of the I.M. Pei & Partners Group. The largest possible panes of glass, both reflective and tinted a slight shade of blue, were used in creating the building. Engineering flaws initially plagued the building, including falling window panes, structural weakness on the narrow sides and even swaying at the top of the building causing motion sickness in residents. Resolution of these issues required that several critical remedies be applied, including replacement of the 10,344 windows, employment of a tuned mass damper on the 58th floor for stabilization and 1500 tons of diagonal steel bracing. Initially built by the John Hancock Insurance Company, it is often still referred to the Hancock Tower, though that company no longer occupied the building. It is always a popular attraction for tourists to the city and has even been filmed for a movie (Godzilla: King of the Monsters) and appears also in the TV series Fringe. On a more personal note, I attended Boston University beginning in 1976 at the height of the initial opening of the building. I often got to view the beautiful building from campus. I also got to enjoy the wonderful reflections of building and sky its many windows acquired while walking around on my many trips to Copley Square getting exercise, meeting friends, or attending concerts. I was thrilled to capture photos of it, once again, after all these years.
