Description
This is a photograph of a culm bank near Archbald Pennsylvania in hard coal country. I first shot it in Infrared then later did an inversion in Photoshop. Culm banks are the accumulated spoil from coal mining sometimes referred to as slag heaps or boney piles. Vegetation is establishing itself and the terrain makes it an enticing landscape for ATV enthusiasts and what appear to be veins on the heap are actually the trails used by them.As a child coming back to visit in this area it sometimes resembled a smoking hell as plumes of smoke rose eerily into the sky. Later as we became 12 yr olds we would play on the heaps riding down on cardboard sliders much to the dismay of our mothers. In addition to the banner, I am adding this more permanent recognition of its FEATURE on the homepage of A TREE OR TREES IN BLACK AND WHITE. I try mightily to feature only images that would be at home in a juried competition. No doubt that this image fits that bill. CONGRATULATIONS! And consider adding your image to DISCUSSIONS "Please post your featured photograph here" for greater, long-lasting visibility.
