Bluestem In The Forest

Driving sort of north on Gum Swamp Road out of Lake City in Columbia County, Florida, you soon pass into the Osceola National Forest. Usually the understory of the pine trees is Saw Palmetto, Serenoa repens, but here it is a sea of Bluestem grass, Andropogon sp. Osceola National Forest is a mixture of dry pineland sand and swamp. The mostly cultivated and harvested Long Leaf Pine Trees, much of the timber goes for making paper although there is a significant amount of lumber made from the larger trees.
