Description
For the Navy, the F8F Bearcat manufactured by Grumman was the best piston engine fighter to see operational service during WWII. Powered by a P&W supercharged R2800 radial engine, it produced more than 2,200 horsepower. That was sufficient to allow the Bearcat to break a "time to climb" record in 1946. Starting at a dead stop and a very short take run of 115 feet, it reached 10,000 feet in 94 seconds. The aircraft has been described as an "engine with a saddle on it." The Bearcat was used extensively through the late 1950's and even into the early 60's with some foreign governments. The Blue Angels were formed in 1946 (By Admiral Nimitz) as an exhibition team and was first introduced at an air show in July 1946. The Navy flew the Grumman F8F in Blue Angels air shows and exhibitions until 1949 when this aircraft was replaced by the Grumman F9F Panther, which was a the first jet driven aircraft used in Naval exhibition air shows.
