Black Skimmer Flying Along Beach At Cedar Island North Carolina

Description
A Black Skimmer, Rynchops niger, flys along the beach at Cedar Island, North Carolina. The largest of the skimers, these birds forage by dragging their elongated lower beak through the water, finding their prey by feel. With their black and white plumage and orange and white bill, they are a striking bird to view. In North America they are known by several names including Seadog, Stormgull, Shearwater and Razorbill.
I had the pleasure of watching several of these graceful birds while I explored the beach on an early June morning. It was a joy watching them skim the surface of tidal pools left along the beach by the low tide. This relatively remote but easily accessible beach is rarely crowded, making it a great location to view, observe and photograph shore birds. It is alos home to a herd of wild Spanish Mustangs as well as a small herd of feral cows.
