Description
Servals usually sport golden coats with black spots, bands and stripes. Although these wild cats are found in most African countries south of the Sahara, there are only four known locations on the east of the continent where you might run into a population of black servals. Servals are notoriously elusive, so determining exactly how many black servals are roaming East Africa is a tricky task. The population does, however, seems to be growing (or our awareness of the unique cats has increased).
Black serval cats owe their dark pigmentation to a genetic condition called melanism, which affects at least 13 of the 37 known feline species worldwide. Black panthers are perhaps the most famous of the melanistic cats. Panthers are not a separate species, but rather the name is an umbrella term used to describe dark-coated leopards in Africa and Asia, and jaguars in South America. Although melanistic cats may look completely uniform in color, spotted felines retain their patterned markings which can still be seen in the right light.
The serval is a slender, medium-sized cat; it stands 21–24 inches at the shoulder and weighs 18–40 lb, but females tend to be lighter. Prominent characteristics include the small head, large ears, long legs and a tail that is around 12 in long. The serval has the longest legs of any cat relative to its body size, largely due to the greatly elongated metatarsal bones in the feet. Servals are considered the best hunters in the cat world, with a nearly 50% kill rate. (A domestic cat's kill rate is more like 10%.)
