Bill Duckett Seated
Artist
Thomas Eakins
Medium
Painting - Oil On Canvas
Description
This is a reproduction of a modification of “Bill Duckett Seated” of about 1889 by Thomas Eakins. The original photograph was taken at the Art Student’s League of Philadelphia. Thomas Eakins was born in Philadelphia in 1844 and studied under Jean-Leon Gerome. This work predates Eakins’ fascination with photography. Eakins is often described as the father of American painting and his works are intensely realistic. He died in 1916. This photograph was taken of a young man who was probably the lover of Walt Whitman. It was taken while Eakins was a professor at the Pennsylvania Academy where he replaced the study of antique sculpture with that of modern photography, particularly of the male nude. This modification of an original photograph by Eakins is available as an oil on canvas painting stretched on wooden bars and measuring 30 by 20 inches.
