They say you never forget how to ride a bike. We tested that old saying when we rented bikes in Levanto Italy to ride the rails to trails path between Levanto, Bonassola, and Framura, just north of the Cinque Terre towns. I estimate it had been thirty years since I’d been on a bike but how hard could it be? Well, not very, as it turns out, despite a bit of a wobbly start. But I learned as Albert Einstein supposedly said: Life is like riding a bicycle—in order to keep your balance, you must keep moving”. And so we did. Riding the rails to trails seemed to be a popular activity….at least judging by the number of bikes we saw chained up at the Framura end of the ride! It’s a flat ride…and short….and leads to the much less crowded beaches at Bonassola and Framura. The ride is only 6 km through some old train tunnels that were built at the end of the 19th century. Along the way there are openings, large and small, where you can watch the wonderful colors of the sea while protecting yourself from the sun and keeping cool. “Life is like a 10-speed bicycle.
