Description
FEATURED ON THE MAIN HOMEPAGE OF FINE ART AMERICA
In this natural minimalist scene in a tropical garden with a blurred rock creek background, one agapanthus capsule (Agapanthus Africanus, or Lily of the Nile) is starting to open in mid-May, revealing the flower’s blue color. Nearly a dozen tiny buds have been growing in this one capsule, now bursting with growth and the promise of a new flowerhead.
Planted in a row of tall-stemmed flowerheads, these striking clusters line a dry creekbed in the tropical Texas Gulf Coast, where they usually start to bloom in April. These were photographed in mid-May (late this year due to a long, harsh winter). These beauties should continue to bloom for about a month. In cooler climates, they typically bloom in the summer and can even be planted in containers. Commonly called African Lily, Lily of the Nile, or simply agapanthus.
Native to South Africa, Agapanthus are such flamboyant and exotic-looking perennials that it is impossible to overlook them. Easy to grow, pest- and disease-free, these beauties are ideal for lovers of a low-maintenance planting area.
