Description
This beautiful bird is a Dark-eyed Junco and it was hopping around the big roots of a tree while I was trekking around a walkway in Southern California. It was looking for insects around the roots and its tilted head was an indicator of its search which made a nice pose. I was standing very still to try to capture a few close ups of it.
Dark-eyed Juncos (Junco hyemalis) are abundant and widespread in the United States. They winter in semi-open habitats near forests and woodlands. They actually have become a stationary bird in California. They mostly forage on the ground and eat seeds and insects. They are songbirds and nest on the ground in hidden areas. Fun fact is they are also called Snowbirds because they usually show up in the winter time in other states and really stand out when the ground is covered in snow.
