Bay Horse On Beach
Photograph - Photograph
This is a bay stallion named Sir Gruff who lives on Assateague Island in Maryland. He had paused, waiting behind as his herd was leaving the beach.
The ponies that live there frequently head to the beach during the hottest part of the day to escape the bugs that plague them during the warmer months. With the breeze on the beach, they can rest without the constant stomping and biting of the flies.
The most challenging thing when photographing them on the beach is getting a good angle so there are not a whole bunch of people also in the photo! If I am following a herd that walks onto the beach, I generally have to back off and simply wait my turn for a few minutes while the tourists run up to take their cell phone photos.
Luckily, once the horses have been on the beach for a while, most of the tourists tend to ignore them.
