Barn Wood Sunflower Hex

Painting - Acrylic + Digital
After discovering some of my dad's unfinished drawings of beautiful Waterloo and Wellington County, Ontario barn hex designs, I thought it was a waste to loose these historic designs so I decided to complete some that I loved. This is the sunflower hex design which is based on the original Pennsylvania Dutch barn hex signs. I have added some barn wood texture for that authentic heritage feel in keeping with the other designs in this series.
Distelfinks, hearts, leaves, flowers and stars - the elements that make up the traditional Pennsylvania Dutch hex designs all had special meanings. It was the belief of these German settlers that created their new home in North America in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, that these designs would bring blessings and good fortune to the home and family in the form of good luck, fertility, love, happiness, good health and many other desirable wishes. These folk art style designs referred to as hex signs were an important part in their culture and traditions. They decorated their farmhouses inside and out with these hand-painted geometric designs, painting them on many household items, above doorways and on their barns.
Today Dutch Hex Signs are enjoyed by people around the world who hang them on their sheds, homes, barns and garages, above doorways, in workshops, and many other locations. Shown here is the colorful sunflower design with a central daisy-like flower surrounded by sunflower seeds, yellow and gold petals encased in a green scalloped circle of endless joy within a black circle of strength that symbolizes eternal luck and success. Some of today's barn quilts are based on these traditional Pennsylvania Dutch elements. Order your reproduction canvas, acrylic prints or art prints - an excellent addition to your country or contemporary kitchen decor! Also great as cafe and deli decorator art prints!
