Description
Band of Gypsys is a live album by Jimi Hendrix without the Experience members. It was recorded at the Fillmore East in New York City from 31 December 1969 into 2 January 1970 with band members basest Billy Cox, who played with him at Woodstock, and drummer Buddy Miles. They played and recorded 47 songs over that time but, only 24 were different songs. Ultimately only six songs comprised the album totaling 45:16 minutes of music.
The album was released on 25 March 1970 on Capital Records and almost immediately reached #18 on the Billboard Top 200 chart. It remained on that chart for 61 weeks ultimately reaching #5. Band of Gypsys was not released in the UK until 12 June 1970 because of legal issues there by PPX Enterprises and Capital Records. It quickly charted on the UK Official Charts Album for 30 weeks reaching #6.
Unfortunately Jimmy Allen Hendrix died 18 September 1970 at the age of 28. His mainstream music career only lasted four years, yet he is widely regarded as on of the greatest guitarist in rock music and a most celebrated musician of the 20th century. He aspirated his own vomit and died of asphyxia while intoxicated with barbiturates. He sadly joined a list of early deaths of successful musicians.
