Description
The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, locally known as the "Ballard Locks" were formally opened on July 4, 1917, although the first ship passed on August 3, 1916.The locks are located a short walk from the historic district of Ballard, Seattle, located in Washington State. Historically Ballard is the traditional center of Seattle's ethnically Scandinavian seafaring community, who were drawn to the area because of the salmon fishing opportunities.
The locks were named after U.S. Army Major Hiram Martin Chittenden, the Seattle District Engineer for the Corps of Engineers from April 1906 to September 1908.
